Explore what Imaginary Friends are hiding in your subconscious
What’s this course about?
This course focuses on painting Imaginary Portraits. We’ll explore which Imaginary Friends are hiding in our subconscious and paint and draw them on paper. We’ll start with the basics of building a face: proportions, how to see a portrait in 3D, and how to exaggerate the features. Then we’ll move on to creating our own imaginary friend.
All the video lessons are pre-recorded, so you can finish it on your own pace. You’ll have access for the lifetime of this course via a private password protected website.
This course consists of 13 video lessons of 2,5 hour in total and includes a written guide.

You want to learn the rules of drawing a portrait, but don’t feel too strict about letting them go either
You’d like to be looser with your mark making and brush strokes
You like using expressive and bold colours

The materials we’ll use in this course
If you want to join this course using the exact same materials I’m using, you’ll need acrylic paints, pencils and oil pastels. We’re painting on thick watercolour paper, but a sketchbook with thick paper also works.
If you have no idea where to start, I recommend watching my online course on mixed media. In that course I also go into the differences in quality with budget and professional materials, as well as what brushes give different results.

Everyone learns in their own way
Which is why I’ve taken the utmost care of creating a written guide to go along this course.
It’s 39 pages long and includes 11 chapters, just like the video lessons.
You’ll be able to download it as a PDF the moment you complete your purchase. You could even print it if you want to.
I go more in depth on certain topics and show step by step guides on how to draw a face, transfer your sketch and build your portrait painting layers.
Hi, it’s me!
The courses are taught by me, Roxy van Bemmel. I have been working as an independent artist for seven years, after graduating from ArtEZ in Fashion Design in 2017.
I have six years of teaching experience at a variety of schools, from vocational (MBO) and higher professional education (HBO) institutions to private courses in illustration and fashion. From 2024 I teach from my own art studio in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Thanks to the diversity of students I have had the pleasure of meeting, I can quickly get to the heart of what you really need.
I believe in creating a lot and also in making ugly things to progress quickly. If you want to get rid of your perfectionism, you’re at the right address!
