Creative Portrait Painting Course | 4 weeks
After teaching several workshops on painting ‘imaginary friends,’ I noticed there is quite a demand for a more in-depth experience. 2.5 hours goes by so quickly, and although you can work comfortably from home, you make the biggest creative strides when you do it with guidance. That's why I've created this expansion pack!
You don’t need to have attended the standalone ‘imaginary friends’ workshop to take part in this course. This course is beginner friendly!

One of the most common dilemmas I hear about when it comes to being creative is: “I want to create, but I don’t know what!” In response to this, I’ve brought the ‘imaginary friends’ to life. Although, we all already carry them within us; they just need to be drawn out from our subconscious and put onto paper.
What you’ll learn
In this four-week course, we will work together to bring our ‘imaginary friends’ to life on paper. There’s plenty of room for personal attention due to the small groups of up to 8 participants, and I will provide you with personal feedback in each class (if you want it, of course!).
In week 1, we’ll take a quick look at ‘the real world’ and how a head actually works in 3D. We’ll do lots of sketching, along with my favorite tool: the timer. This way, you’ll make sure not to fall into perfectionism.
In week 2, you’ll get an introduction to materials, specifically acrylic paint. We’ll work with professional paint that’s rich in pigment, so you won’t be held back by lower-quality materials. This week, we’ll focus on individual elements of the face, with or without reference photos.
In week 3, we’ll bring our materials together with our imaginary friends! I’ll teach you how to build a painting on paper and how to choose an inspiring color palette. This week, there will be lots of room for personal feedback, and you can also start brainstorming ideas for your ‘final project’ next week.
What you’ll receive:

Lots of space for personal feedback because we work in a small group (max 8 participants)
Including all professional drawing and painting materials.
Every lesson (non) alcoholic drinks included, as well as coffee, tea, refreshments.
In week 4, we’ll dive into your final project! We’ll focus the entire class on your own painting on paper, and you can work in whatever size you prefer. Maybe it’s 9 mini paintings, or perhaps one large piece! Be sure to bring all your drawings and paintings so we can see your entire process come together.

The workshops are in Dutch, so if you understand Dutch that’s great! If you don’t, I’m happy to translate for you. Just be a little more patient. Plus, in my experience whenever someone in the group doesn’t understand English, the Dutch participants are happy to talk English with you.
If you book a group/private workshop I’m happy to do it in English of course.

My studio is at a 20 minute walking distance from Utrecht central or you can reach it by bus from there. There’s a (paid) parking garage next to the building.

Since I purchase materials based on the number of participants and cannot guarantee that I’ll be able to fill your spot, I need to maintain a specific cancellation policy. Thank you for your understanding!

A few days before the workshop starts, you will always receive an email from me with an overview of where to go and my phone number in case anything last minute comes up. It will also say whether you need to bring your own materials, though usually this is not necessary.

Of course, I love beginners! Of course! All workshops (unless otherwise specified) are for all skill levels, even if you've never held a pencil before. I'll guide you through the workshop with various exercises so you can create something beautiful even without experience. Plus, it's all about embracing the work-in-progress :-)

No! Every month is different. I try to organize at least one workshop each month, so make sure to keep an eye on the schedule or subscribe to the newsletter.
If you want to take a specific workshop that’s no longer available, feel free to contact me for a private session.

Sometimes I teach through other organisations that offer cheaper workshops and I’ll promote those via my social media. Considering material and studio costs this is the best price I can offer on my personal workshops. In the future I’d like to offer community tickets if a workshop sells out (I’ve been in your situation!), but not yet for this one.
